A day in the life of a Greenskeeper

Asa High kneels down and runs his fingers across the short grass. Back and forth. He explains every grass has a “tell” like in poker. By looking at it, touching it, he can see if it’s healthy and what it needs.

Asa High is the Senior Director of Golf Course Operations at Adena, a new private club community in Ocala, Florida. His role is to see to it that this course is aesthetically beautiful and conditioned properly for daily play as well as planning future projects to make sure that the golf course will be ranked as one of the top golf courses in the state and ultimately in the country. With the help of High and his team, the Adena course was recently named one of this year’s best new courses by Golf Digest.

“There are so many things that go into conditioning the course. It is very much a science but also an art. It’s being an environmental steward as well. Making sure you’re using the proper plant protectants, that you’re respecting the environment while creating the best possible conditions that you can through agronomic practices, through science, and understanding of how grass grows,” says High.

High earned a bachelor degree in agricultural operations and a master degree in environmental horticulture and turfgrass science from the University of Florida.   After graduating High spent nearly 8 years honing his craft at Augusta National Golf Club before joining the team at Adena.  High is also a member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, the Florida Golf Course Superintendents Association, and more. He maintains the pristine greens of Adena through every science, technology and art available to make sure the experience is one to be remembered.

Adena is built on 450 acres and many of the holes are sculpted out of mining quarries. Every hole has character. Hanging trees have to be negotiated on several tee shots and the elevation changes are both visually pleasing and strategically challenging. To say you’re in good hands at Adena is an understatement.
