Q&A: Patrick Jenkins, Director of Tennis
We recently sat down with Patrick Jenkins, our Director of Tennis, who has coached at all four Grand Slam tennis championships, coached 27 national champions, 9 high school state championship teams, and was named Florida Coach of the Year!
As Director of Tennis at Adena, what do you want members to take away from the experience?
PJ: We do things differently here. Mr. Stronach has the ability to make our members’ experience like no other in the region. When you step on the property, we don’t want you to lift a finger. We set up the ball machine for you and help you with the balls as you hit them. When you don’t have a partner and need someone to hit with, I’ll be the first one out there hitting balls with you. And that’s just not the typical experience you get at most country clubs.
What do you think makes you unique as an instructor of tennis?
PJ: I’m one of the few directors that have coached on the tour and coached competitive junior tennis, so from a technical standpoint our members get a little bit more higher-level instruction than they do at most clubs.

What’s your proudest moment in your long tennis career?
PJ: I would say I’m one of the few coaches that’s taken a player from beginner to the tour. I stayed with one of my players for 13 years and helped develop her until she reached the top 100 in the world. And then helped her get into med school and on to be a doctor. The completion of that whole process as a coach, to a mentor and motivator is something I take a lot of pride in.
What unique services do you offer Adena members?
PJ: One of our things is our ball machine is free to members; something most clubs charge for. We have new balls readily available for members to practice with and professional grade Har-Tru courts, so they’re always playing in optimal conditions. I’m here to play with them whenever they want. And all of our instructions and group lessons are private lessons. We’re a full concierge tennis service.
Who would you say is the biggest player you’ve played with or coached with or were on the same court with? This is your time for bragging rights!
PJ: The biggest is probably Venus and Serena Williams. But Andy Roddick would definitely be my favorite of all time, for sure. I got to know Andy and coached against him and he trained with us for a little bit.
What’s your end goal for the tennis experience, here at Adena?
PJ: I just want every member to have a great experience. I want it to be their club. I want them to be able to set foot on the court and have a great time. And not have to worry about what’s happening outside the gates. I just want members to feel comfortable and happy.
